Nicolás' Story
Nicolás* came to the U.S. without documentation from El Salvador many years
ago,
desperate to escape the violence in his country and provide for his
family. He eventually was able to help
his family escape and together they started a life in the U.S. Nicolás has four U.S. citizen children who
consider the U.S. their home.
Tragically, Nicolás was the victim of a violent assault in the St. Louis
area, causing him severe physical
injuries and psychological trauma.
Nicolás was cooperative with the police in investigating the crime and
prosecuting the suspect. After coming
into contact with the MICA Project at a Know Your Rights presentation, he
learned about the possibility that he could qualify for lawful status as a
result of his help to law enforcement as a victim of violent crime. MICA Project attorneys have helped Nicolás
start this process and he looks forward to a brighter future for his family.
It's a tragic story. Nicolás came to the United States from one of the most dangerous countries on earth, only to suffer violence in his new homeland.
But it's also a story of bravery. Nicolás overcame the challenges presented by his physical injuries and psychological trauma. He helped the police investigate and prosecute, despite his vulnerability due to his immigration status. And he helped achieve justice.
The MICA Project works with many victims of crimes who have subsequently been helpful in an investigation or prosecution. Can you honor their suffering and their contribution to our society by helping to support their cases?
